Flying Scotsman Centenary Special

A journey between Bishops Lydeard to Minehead with fish & chips on return

The iconic Flying Scotsman, built in 1923, will travel the "West Somerset Railway"  as part of a centenary tour visiting UK's heritage railways to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the modern railway.

Officially the first steam locomotive to reach 100mph, 60103 Flying Scotsman was built at Doncaster in 1922. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built for the LNER, the locomotive was named ‘Flying Scotsman’ in 1923 and continued in regular service until 1963 and then later in preservation. Today, it is owned by the National Railway Museum in York and is operated and maintained by Riley & Son (E) Ltd.

Join us, for this rare opportunity as we travel behind the iconic Flying Scotsman a journey of 20 miles from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead enjoying the heritage railway through stunning Somerset countryside and coast.

A true country branch line of the old Great Western Railway is full of fascination whether you are looking for a nostalgic ride back in time through lovely countryside or to study the railway and industrial heritage which the line preserves..

The surrounding countryside is as varied as it is beautiful.

The gently rolling Quantock hills and distant Exmoor, unspoilt villages and farms nestling in leafy lanes, the cliffs and coast of the Bristol Channel with views of distant South-Wales, confident Church Towers, Dunster's imposing Castle and Minehead's seaside charm are all waiting to be discovered.

Travel behind the iconic Flying Scotsman service from Bishops Lydeard and meander through the Quantock Hills and along the coast to Minehead taking in the breath taking scenery.

When we reach our destintation of Minehead you have time at leisure.

Return train will leave Minehead travelling behind  home fleet locomotive, whilst enjoying fish and chips  as you travel back to Bishops Lydeard.
