Stroud
Situated below the western escarpment of the Cotswold Hills and capital of the Stroud District, Stroud has many labels including Jasper Conran referring to Stroud as "the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds", the London Evening Standard likened Stroud to "Notting Hill with wellies" and the Daily Telegraph referred to Stroud as "the artistic equivalent of bookish Hay-on-Wye".
However you choose to look at it, Stroud is noted for its steep streets and vibrant mix of independent shops and cafes, plus offering a wide variety of scenery and attractions to welcome visitors and the community alike.
It has a vibrant coffee culture, plethora of independent and unique shops, plus historical sights in and around the town.
Stroud has long been recognised as a haven for those looking for all things vintage and antique, as showcased on the town's Vintage Trail of thriving vintage
emporiums.
Nearby Stratford Park and Arboretum houses a collection many of the specimens here are believed to date to the same time Westonbirt was created. Within these grounds you will also find The Museum in the Park and its popular Walled Garden.
Ross on Wye
Set on a high sandstone cliff overlooking a large loop in the River Wye is the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye. The view of Ross-on-Wye is dominated by the spire of St. Mary's Church, which is visible for many miles around. Built of red sandstone in the 13th century, St. Maryýs has some interesting features and is well worth a visit.
On the west side of the churchyard is the 'Prospect' a pleasant view point and garden where you can look down on the River Wye curving beneath the town.
The gardens were laid by 'The Man of Ross' locally know as John Kyrle, a generous benefactor of the town of Ross, who lived between 1637 and 1725.
Simply meander along a fantastic selection of specialist independent shops who have formed a trail, providing visitors looking for antiques, collectibles, bric-a-brac, vintage & retro clothes, jewellery, arts, crafts and furniture with a fascinating tour around the town.
